Movie Synopsis: It is 1856, and Townsend Harris (John Wayne) who is appointed the first American to consul Japan, while being headquartered in Shimoda. Townsend discovers that the people of Japan thoroughly mistrust the people of America (and, as it turned out, not without reason) It is an uphill climb. However, Townsend gradually earns the trust, and respect of the local power brokers, and in doing this, he is permitted to enter the city of Tokyo. Geisha Girl Okichi (Eiko Ando), originally sent to thwart Townsend’s mission, falls in love with him, and protects him from any harm that may come his way. |
